Wrapped Human Body Final Image & Statement

Artist Statement:
This installation set in the Ponce Residence Hall at Flagler college was a visual representation of a story in Mythology that involves romance, devastation, ambition, and bargaining. The story is of Orpheus and his wife Eurydice, who were a young couple in the times of ancient Greece who were madly in love. In tragic times Eurydice dies after being bitten by a venomous snake and in turn Orpheus fell into a terrible bout of despair. He began bargaining and gambling for any thing that might bring his young wife back to him. In the end his solution was to go into the Underworld and ask Hades and Persephone themselves, to bring Eurydice back from the dead. In doing this Hades agreed to let Eurydice come back to life under the condition that when they left the Underworld, Orpheus was not allowed to look at Eurydice until she had been fully exposed to the light. Determined to have his love back, Orpheus agreed, but as they began their ascent he became suspicious of Hades and distrustful so he looked back to see if Eurydice was actually following him and she was indeed, only as a Shade from the Underworld. However, Orpheus broke the single condition of Hades offer, so Eurydice was sent back to the Underworld and Orpheus would never be with his love ever again.
In my representation of this story I wrapped my male model in Ace bandages to signify the shell of the man and holding himself together in despair with a single eye exposed to symbolize the fate of Orpheus and Eurydice. My second model crouched in the fireplace had a simple black sheet placed over herself with her hand exposed to signify her connection the other model.
