Wrapped Human Body Final Image & Statement

  Artist Statement:  This installation set in the Ponce Residence Hall at Flagler college was a visual representation of a story in Mythology that involves romance, devastation, ambition, and bargaining. The story is of Orpheus and his wife Eurydice, who were a young couple in the times of ancient Greece who were madly in love. In tragic times Eurydice dies after being bitten by a venomous snake and in turn Orpheus fell into a terrible bout of despair. He began bargaining and gambling for any thing that might bring his young wife back to him. In the end his solution was to go into the Underworld and ask Hades and Persephone themselves, to bring Eurydice back from the dead. In doing this Hades agreed to let Eurydice come back to life under the condition that when they left the Underworld, Orpheus was not allowed to look at Eurydice until she had been fully exposed to the light. Determined to have his love back, Orpheus agreed, but as they began their ascent he became suspicious...

  Artist Statement:  My inspiration for this piece was based in the 1934 movie My Man Godfrey with William Powell and Carole Lombard. The theme of the movie overall is about the social construct in society of who is important and who is not. People with money and style are often most revered, but they lack character and good judgement. They are often ridiculous and have no consideration for consequence or actions where as someone who has experienced highs and lows in life often are humble and hardworking for the good things in life that others take for granted. The plate of pearls symbolize wealth and as they spill off the plate into the dirt it is almost a clash of two worlds. The dirt underneath the plate is meant to represent the idea that rich people are only rich off the labor that "poor" or lower people provide yet as thanks they are kicked to the dirt. The crossing of the forks is the idea that in the end we all eat with a fork, because we are no different, we all need...
