Dinner & A Movie Final & Artist Statement
Artist Statement:
My inspiration for this piece was based in the 1934 movie My Man Godfrey with William Powell and Carole Lombard. The theme of the movie overall is about the social construct in society of who is important and who is not. People with money and style are often most revered, but they lack character and good judgement. They are often ridiculous and have no consideration for consequence or actions where as someone who has experienced highs and lows in life often are humble and hardworking for the good things in life that others take for granted. The plate of pearls symbolize wealth and as they spill off the plate into the dirt it is almost a clash of two worlds. The dirt underneath the plate is meant to represent the idea that rich people are only rich off the labor that "poor" or lower people provide yet as thanks they are kicked to the dirt. The crossing of the forks is the idea that in the end we all eat with a fork, because we are no different, we all need to eat and rich or poor you need a fork to eat with. The job ads as the table cloth is a comment on how rich people or even people in general are quick to turn away jobs or labor intensive jobs because they dont want to work that hard. People dont want to work unless they can make the most amount of money with the least amount of work, and they look down upon people in those positions.
