"Sensitive"

Ink and Marker on Paper

Chapter- Touch, pages 67& 68
Quotes: "Holding in all the thick red jams and jellies inside us where they belong." & "It imprisons us, but also gives us individual shape"
The inspiration for this piece was found in both quotes I have listed above. Viewing the skin as an organ rather than something we happen to have, puts it into perspective that the human flesh is not just meant to be something pleasing to the eye. It is a whole 10 pound organ that holds in, and protects, everything inside our bodies that we require to function. The skin is something that is malleable and able to endure a great deal of sensations and physical objects we encounter in the day to day. The plus side is that it is an organ that is pleasing to the eye and extremely varied from person to person which adds to the aesthetic.
"Chrysalis"
5" x 6"
Graphite, Ink & Marker on Paper
Inspired by Diana Ackerman's "A Natural History of the Senses"
Chapter- Touch, pg. 72
Quote: "Reaching carefully scrubbed, disinfected, warmed hands through the portholes of the incubator with pangs of protectiveness, I touched him; it's like reaching into a chrysalis."
This piece and the quote in this chapter is extremely personal to my life as I had to experience as a child what it was like to see an infant wired up and confined to the walls a small incubator. It is so hard to see a child's body try and fight whatever unfortunate circumstances they were born into, but they human body is incredible in ability to heal itself even in the earliest times of its life. Thinking about it now, the incubator is like a chrysalis, but the human skin is also a chrysalis to us, and it is constantly changing and adapting to its environment for us to live. Truly an incredible thing the human body is and even though it is more susceptible to destruction at a young age, with the proper care and attention, it can overcome.
